Biscuit Donuts

I remember as a child…watching my precious Mama as she stood at the stove cooking these sweet biscuit donuts.  A paper towel lined plate and brown lunch bags were close at hand.  The ingredients inside held different varieties of sweetness.  Powdered sugar, my favorite,  cinnamon and sugar, and plain ole granulated sugar could be found inside. 




A pop as the biscuit tubes burst opened, let me know sweet, simple, sweet goodness, would soon be handed to me.  Frying begins as I stand behind Mama’s apron strings.  Shake, shake, shake in a select brown bag and oh my, my little hands could hardly wait.  Fast forward...my boys now do as I did so many years ago.  Waiting as I fry up the biscuit dough that in turn becomes sugary donuts. ;)  One twin told me the donut he was munching on was rather delicious and I should open a donut shop.  :)  Such sweet boys, they do melt my heart.  ~insert loving smile~  I’m thankful for the precious memories made with my boys and those I am able to share with them.


Biscuit Donuts
Ingredients

tube of biscuits, 8 to 10 count

!/2 cup powdered sugar, more if needed
and/or
1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 to 1 teaspoon cinnamon, more if needed
oil

You will also need:
deep skillet
bamboo skewer  or long fork
plate paper towels
paper bags or bowls

In a heavy skillet with high sides,  pour oil about 2” deep.    Heat on medium high or 350 degrees F.  Place a few sheets of paper towels on a plate.  Put powdered sugar or cinnamon and sugar, in a brown lunch bag.    Open biscuit tube.  Separate biscuits.  
Poke a hole in the middle and enlarge it by pulling gently.   

Put on paper towels.  

Test oil if you don’t have a thermometer by pinching a little piece of biscuit and putting it in oil.   If there is a fast sizzle, it is ready.
  


When oil is hot enough, gently place a donut in oil.  Do not over crowd, 2 or 3 should be just right, depending on size of skillet.
Turn over with skewer or long fork, once the bottom is golden to medium brown.  Watch carefully, they brown fast!  Cook about another minute until brown, and place on paper towel lined plate.  

Continue until all are cooked.  Place in brown lunch bag or bowl filled with your desired coating, one at a time and shake, shake, shake…this if fun for the kids.  



Take out and put on serving plate.  Enjoy!
